Local umpires learn from the AFL’s elite

During March local umpiring groups from across Greater Sydney and Northern NSW got to meet and interact with the AFL’s elite umpires as part of the AFL Umpire Roadshow.

AFL Field umpire Troy Pannell and AFL Boundary umpire Darren Wilson shared their knowledge with umpires in Sydney and the Illawarra, while AFL Field umpire Matthew Stevic visited Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie to share his experience officiating at the top level.

During the visit, training days and nights were held with local umpire groups in Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie, Wollongong and Blacktown in Sydney’s west.

These sessions included skill activities and the opportunity for local umpires and new recruits to ask questions of what it is like to umpire at the elite level, leaving many of the juniors inspired to work hard to achieve their potential.

As part of the Roadshow the umpries also attended ten local high schools to promote umpiring as a great way to keep fit, learn more about the game and earn some money. Students were also given the opportunity to participate in some skill activities and games, along with asking questions.

One of the highlights of the trip was a visit to the Illawarra Lions Football Club, where the players were able to go through the law interpretations for 2011 with Troy Pannell. This session will hopefully better prepare the players for the season ahead.

Umpire Development Officer Carl Fletcher said the Roadshow was a great experience for all involved.

“Opportunities like these are priceless for local AFL communities,” Fletcher said.

“The knowledge, advice and skills that these umpires can share with local umpires helps them improve their skills while also motivating them to achieve their potential.

“While the school visits and club visits help promote umpiring as a positive experience and a great way to be involved in the game.”
