Hunter Central Coast’s Sarah Halvorsen set for GIANT debut

The GIANTS will celebrate the debut of its 54th AFL Women’s player when North Coast’s Sarah Halvorsen makes her first appearance for the club this Saturday.

GIANTS AFL Women’s Coach Alan McConnell announced that the 24-year-old would be making her debut in GIANTS TV’s Coach’s Insight.

“It’s a great story, Sarah’s probably tried to make an AFLW list now for three or four years,” McConnell told

“She’s a young woman who commutes, every time we train, from Newcastle.

“She has a fantastic job up there as an engineer and has made an amazing commitment to become a semi-professional footballer.

“Tall, athletic and quick, she comes from a touch rugby background, has a family history in the game.”

Halvorsen joined the GIANTS with pick 61 of the 2019 NAB AFLW Draft from AFL Hunter Central Coast side Newcastle City.

The former Australian Rugby 7s representative is a versatile tall, being able to play back or forward.

While Halvorsen will come into the side for injured forward Yvonne Bonner, McConnell insists it’s not a like-for-like swap.

“At this stage I’m not exactly sure where she will finish up, where she will ultimately play, but probably generally ahead of the ball and I’m really excited about what she’ll bring on the weekend and what she’ll bring going forward,” he said.

The GIANTS play Richmond at Robertson Oval in Wagga Wagga on Saturday, March 7 at 5:10pm. Entry is FREE!
