Green determined to build on solid debut season
Twenty-twenty brought mixed emotions for GIANTS midfielder Tom Green.
The 19-year-old re-signed with the GIANTS, made his AFL debut against Geelong in March and was named the AFL’s Rising Star nominee for his performance against Collingwood in Round 4.
However, the GIANTS failed to replicate their brilliant 2019 campaign in 2020, losing five of their last seven games of the season to fall out of the top eight.
That makes it tough for Green to look back fondly on the season, with his individual achievements overshadowed by the GIANTS’ failure to qualify for the finals for the first time since 2015.
“There’re different sides to the year,” Green said.
“I think my first game I was a little bit all over the place with nerves on my debut but certainly against Collingwood I really felt like I started to find my feet at the elite level.
“On the field, as a team, it was a disappointing year.
“Obviously it was a very trying season on and off the field, but we’ve had a really good in-depth review of last season and know what we need to do to get back into contention this year.”
Following his outstanding performance against Collingwood, Green played a further four senior games throughout the season, taking his career total to six.
While happy to bide his time throughout 2020, the Marist College Canberra product is determined to permanently win a place in the GIANTS’ best 22 in 2021.
“With the squad we’ve got, it’s going to be very tough to get a spot, but I’d love to play every game this season,” Green said.
“I want to play my part in getting the GIANTS back to playing finals football.”
Green’s younger brother Josh is currently training with Richmond ahead of the AFL’s Supplementary Selection Period after narrowly missing out on selection in December’s NAB AFL Draft.
“I’ve sent him a few messages to check in and see how he’s going,” Green said.
“Josh is certainly good enough to play AFL football and training with Richmond is a really good opportunity for him.
“As much as I’d love to see him at the GIANTS if he can get picked by Richmond I’ll be stoked.”
