The final matches of the 2018 Joss State Zone Trials have played out in Albury today, completing three days worth of competition between the best Under-13 and Under-14 Sydney Swans and GIANTS Academy players from the region.

Jason Saddington, Head GIANTS Academy Coach, said that he saw plenty of talent coming through during the week.

“All up it’s about six games of footy in three days, so it’s quite a big workload in terms of footy content,” said Saddington.

While football is the main aim of the trials, AFL NSW/ACT State Manager for Talent and Coaching, Darren Denneman says the carnival is designed to educate on much more.

“The camp is really focused not only on the exploits that are happening [on the field] but also on how they behave, how they recover and how they prepare off the ground,” said Denneman.

Spending the week away from their families to improve their game and live like AFL players aims to prepare the teenagers for what is to be expected during an AFL career.

“There’s about 60 male AFL players [from the region] on senior lists at the moment and probably about 85% of them have played in a carnival in this same sort of format.”

AFL NSW/ACT would like to thank all the players, umpires and coaches who made this week in Albury happen.
