Sydney Swans vs. Redland Bombers

The Sydney Swans have all but wrapped up the minor premiership after defeating the Redland Bombers by 127 points.

With the Brisbane Lions losing their game against the Suns, the Swans now sit four-points ahead on the table with a far superior percentage.

The Swans rushed out of the blocks, kicking seven goals in the opening term to put the Bombers on the back foot. In front of a growing crowd at the SCG, the Swans grew more and more into the game. This was highlighted by a ten-goal third quarter in which the home side also managed to keep the Bombers scoreless.

The final quarter was a much closer affair but the damage had been done, with the Swans comfortable victors.

Aliir Aliir impressed yet again in the ruck. In a move that could be a tactical masterstroke, Aliir has stepped up to be an imposing figure and has provided his midfield with plenty of clean ball around the stoppages.

Sam Fisher finished the game with some incredible numbers. He kicked four goals to go with 33 disposals, seven marks and six tackles as he made the most of plenty of space on the half-forward flank.

Dan Robinson (36 disposals, one goal) and Jordan Dawson (26 disposals, three goals) also saw a lot of the ball and continued their recent good form.

The Swans travel to the Gold Coast to take on the Suns at Metricon Stadium in the last game of the home-and-away season.

Canberra Demons vs. Sydney University

Sydney University has ended the Canberra Demons finals hopes with a 59-point win in the nation’s capital.

In what was a relatively even encounter in the first half, the Students kicked away late to secure an important victory heading into the finals series.

University got off to the better start, opening up a 16-point lead at the first break. The Demons kept them honest for the rest of the half as the Students were only able to increase their lead to 20-points by the main break.

The away side then kicked away, putting through ten goals to the Demons four in the second half to open up an unassailable lead. Both teams had some issues with inaccuracy, but the Demons will feel if they could have kicked straighter they would have been in with a shot in this encounter.

Ryan Hebron was best on ground for the Students, as the defender took 15 marks to go with 26 disposals in an imposing performance. Jack Hiscox kicked three goals to lead the way on the scoreboard, while Tom Young and Zac O’Brien picked up 31 disposals each in the midfield.

For the Demons, Jordan Harper was again the stand out with 35 disposals and six tackles. He was aided admirably by Alex Smout (31 disposals) and Sam Martyn (30 disposals).

Sydney University travel to Queensland to take on the Bombers at Tibold Park while the Demons face Southport at Fankhauser Reserve.
