Female Footy booming in the Hunter and Central Coast

The future of women’s AFL looks extremely bright in the Hunter and Central Coast after the Black Diamond AFL Women’s competition unveiled four new teams that will take part in the 2016 season.

The league has expanded to ten following the inclusion of Cardiff, Gosford, Killarney Vale and Singleton.

The announcement follows the inclusion of a strong contingent of players from Newcastle and the surrounding areas in the first female Academy games between the Sydney Swans and GWS GIANTS to be held at Lakeside Oval this Saturday.

Women’s AFL has seen unprecedented growth in the state with 69,000 registered females participating in the sport last year.

All ten sides will compete in the annual Black Diamond AFL Women’s Gala Day at Tulkaba Park in Teralba this Saturday with games commencing at 10am and the final scheduled for 2pm.

Any women interested in having a game are encouraged by Black Diamond Football Operations Manager Garry Burkinshaw to come down on the day.

“Women’s AFL is growing at a rapid rate in the Hunter and Central Coast region and we’d love to see more new faces on Saturday,” Mr Burkinshaw said.

“Female footy is booming in the area so we want anyone who’s interested to come and check out what the fuss is all about.”
