Recognition for superfan Brenton
By Michael DiFabrizio
An impressive young man stole the show at AFL South Coast’s senior presentation on Saturday night – but it wasn’t a player, coach or umpire.
It was 21 year-old Brenton Ashford-Potter, who has been a dedicated supporter of the SCAFL and Northern Districts Tigers Australian Football Club since the age of six months.
Brenton was born with Down Syndrome and Severe Verbal Dyspraxia, and regardless of what life throws at him, he continues to never let disability hold him back in his passion for sport.
Brenton’s love for the game has been instilled in him through his Aunty Lyndelle and Uncle Frank, a club stalwart having played for almost 40 years with Northern Districts.
Throughout any given season, Brenton can be found on the sidelines – rain, hail or shine – cheering on the boys. Brenton’s big smile, infectious nature, hugs, handshakes, high fives, and sportsmanship are renowned throughout the league, and they are always offered to the opposing side.
In fact, more often than not, Brenton can be seen and heard joining in the opposing team‘s club song.
Such is the impact of this young man on the club, a perpetual trophy for the Most Improved Player has been named in his honour, befitting his position as the number one supporter. Brenton takes great pride in presenting it to the recipient each year at the annual presentation night.
Through his involvement with the club, Brenton has even had a stint at assisting with training sessions and on game day. And it is Brenton who you will find reassuring any injured player, including those being carted away in an ambulance, everything will be OK.
Brenton can often be seen in the paper and on TV, such is his love for all sports. Brenton is a fantastic ambassador for sport in general, but in particular the SCAFL.
