Century milestone for Holten

A rising star on the local Aussie Rules scene has kicked his way into the record books at an incredible pace.

Chris Holten, of the Macleay Valley Eagles, recently notched up 100 goals in only his second season.

Not bad going, for an only just-turned 12-year-old.

What’s even more impressive is that he often plays alongside and against older, bigger and stronger boys in the under 13 and under 15.5s (15 and a half) teams.

Holten reached his centurial milestone in July and was unaware until after the match that he had done so.

Mentors and Eagles coaches Kevin Ackerly and Ronda Colliver are full of admiration for the young star.

“He just has an air about him,” Ackerly said.

“He’s captain and does the job beautifully in directing players on the field without being arrogant or showing off.”

And Colliver added:

“Chris ducks and weaves. He’s fearless. He doesn’t lift his eye when other players are coming at him and is a beautiful kicker.

“He’s earned those 100-plus goals the hard way and listens to what you say.”

Holten was the top scorer in the u-13s and second in the u-15.5s – missing four games last season that would doubtless have had him topping the scoring charts.

The pint-sized full forward is also a member of AFL newcomers the Greater Western Sydney Giants.

“My dream is to play at (the Giants’) Blacktown Stadium,” he said.

“My favourite player is Israel Folau.”

Holten comes from a good sporting pedigree, with uncles in the NRL.

Dad, Darren, is proud of his son’s achievements.

“Chris has developed himself a lot through different sports,” he said.

“He’s got real good leadership qualities and encourages others.”

Ackerly and Colliver are equally effusive about Holten’s off-field conduct and said he was a great role model for his friends and teammates.

“They’re a really tight-knit bunch and they all look up to Chris,” Ackerly said.

“It would be wonderful for Kempsey if he did make it.”

Holten’s prowess extends to rugby league and cricket and his coaches recognise that he might decide not to follow an AFL path.

Both are happy for him to succeed in whatever sport he chooses, but hope he continues to shine for the Eagles while he remains with the club.
