NSW/ACT Player of the Week: Phil Davis

Greater Western Sydney co-captain Phil Davis will return to his hometown of Canberra this weekend when his side takes on the Melbourne Demons on Saturday afternoon at Manuka Oval.

Davis grew up in the nation’s capital, first picking up a Sherrin at the age of 10 at the predominately rugby-dominated Marist College.

At 14 his family moved to South Australia where he played his junior football at St Peter’s College before representing North Adelaide in the SANFL.

The Adelaide Crows selected Davis with pick 10 in the 2008 NAB AFL Draft but injuries held the talented defender back before he made his AFL debut against Carlton at AAMI Stadium in Round 4, 2010.

He was nominated for the NAB Rising Star award in Round 16 that year and played 15 games for the season. He played three more in 2011 before a shoulder injury ended his season.

Davis was the first player to sign for the Greater Western Sydney Giants in September 2011 and was later named their inaugural co-captain alongside Callan Ward and Luke Power.

He has been the Giants’ main man in defence this season, playing every game and holding down the position of key defender for the league’s newest team.

He picked up a season-high 23 disposals and seven marks in the Giants’ Round 12, 12-point loss to Richmond and kicked two goals against Carlton in Round 6.
