300 Power-ful games
Luke Power will become just the 66th player in VFL-AFL history to reach 300 games when he lines up for the Greater Western Sydney Giants against the Melbourne Demons at Manuka Oval on Saturday.
During a magnificent career spanning 15 seasons with the Brisbane Lions and the Giants, Power has achieved just about everything in the game including three premierships, All-Australian selection and captaining both clubs.
Giants Chief Executive David Matthews congratulated Power on his impact and influence on the game.
“He has been an outstanding player but is also an outstanding individual and a wonderful teammate and friend to many people in football and we are delighted that he will bring up his 300th game for the Giants in Canberra this weekend,” Matthews said.
“Luke has had a unique impact on Australian football and the growth of the game in Queensland and New South Wales and is thoroughly deserving of this significant milestone.”
Power joined the Giants after playing 282 games with Brisbane. Drafted from Balwyn and Oakleigh U/18s in 1997, he was a member of the Lions’ 2001, 2002 and 2003 premierships sides and was co-captain of Brisbane in 2007-08. He was All-Australian in 2004 and has kicked 226 goals.
In 2012 he was appointed one of inaugural co-captains of the Giants and is also one of the club’s assistant coaches.
“I encourage all AFL fans to get along to Manuka Oval this Saturday and acknowledge his contribution to the game and a fantastic playing career,” Matthews said.
