NSW/ACT Notebook: Round 9 wrap

By Michael DiFabrizio

Collingwood 8.7 (55) def. by Sydney Swans 15.12 (102)

The Sydney Swans put in a dominant display against fellow top four hopeful Collingwood on Friday night.

Despite their bus to the MCG breaking down – forcing some players to catch a tram to the game – the Swans came out firing to lead at quarter time by nine points and remained in front at every change thereafter. More remarkably, the Pies scored just one goal in the second and third quarters combined.

The back line had a huge say in that occurring. Collingwood had nine more inside 50s (54-45) … but the Swans just sent it straight back out again. They had 16 more rebound 50s (28-44), led by Nick Malceski who had 10 of them, and held the Pies to just 15 scoring shots.

Fittingly in Indigenous Round, Adam Goodes was best on ground with 30 disposals, three goals and 11 marks.

Dan Hannebery once again shone with 31 touches and two goals, both Malceski and Jarrad McVeigh had 30 touches and both Ben McGlynn and Mike Pike had two goals.

For the home side, Luke Ball and Scott Pendlebury had 28 disposals each.

The Swans return to the SCG next Saturday to face Essendon.

GWS GIANTS 8.7 (55) def. by West Coast Eagles 23.17 (155)

Saturday was a struggle for the GIANTS with West Coast claiming their fourth consecutive win, this one by 100 points.

Jonathan Giles was no match for the powerful combo of Dean Cox and Nic Naitanui, who won the hitouts 22-55. Up forward, the Eagles’ wide array of attacking options were lively, with Jack Darling and Josh Kennedy both kicking five and Mark LeCras and Josh Hill both kicking three.

Chris Masten, Luke Shuey and Matt Priddis all helped set up the win in the midfield.

While it seemed obvious quite early in the contest which way the four points would go, the GIANTS still got some handy signs out of the game, including another strong performance from Jeremy Cameron. He took eight marks and kicked three goals, putting him equal sixth on the Coleman Medal table.

Stephen Coniglio and Stephen Gilham both used the ball well while Taylor Adams had 28 touches.

Next week, the GIANTS travel to Etihad Stadium to face Carlton.

NSW/ACT Notes

NSW/ACT players hit the scoreboard to help get their teams over the line this weekend. Tom Hawkins (Finley) had six goals for Geelong in their away win over Port Adelaide. Meanwhile, Dylan Addison (St George) had a big say in the Western Bulldogs’ upset win over St Kilda with a team-high four goals.

In the Swans and GIANTS games, Jarrad McVeigh (Pennant Hills), Ben McGlynn (Wentworth) and Kieren Jack (Pennant Hills) were all outstanding against Collingwood, while Josh Bruce (Eastlake) had 17 disposals against West Coast and Anthony Miles (North Albury) had 15 with six tackles.

Brent Staker (West Broken Hill) put in a strong showing for the second week in a row, with 17 disposals, six marks and a goal in Brisbane’s loss to Carlton. In Hawthorn’s win over Gold Coast, Luke Breust (Temora) had 15 disposals and a goal, Isaac Smith had 23 touches.
