Independent Schools Competition a success

The competition’s first season has garnered a great deal of interest, and invigorated plans to expand on the 10 teams that represented Knox, Waverley, Trinity, St Patrick’s, St Ignatius and Cranbrook this year.
The support of volunteers, and the AFL NSW/ACT’s talent and coaching staff ensured a positive match day environment in which late primary and early high school students could develop an understanding and passion for the game.
“It has been wonderful to watch the players’ progress throughout the season, all sides improved markedly in terms of skill and how they understood the game,” said Luke Turner, the Independent Schools Competition Manager.
AFL NSW/ACT General Manager, Tom Harley, was full of praise for the way the competition was run, and the opportunities it presented to young players.
“I think everyone will agree that it was a fantastic first season, and we are extremely pleased with the outcomes of the competition,” Harley said.
“I was particularly pleased to note that several players have been invited to try out for the Sydney Swans Academy as a result of their involvement in the competition; it certainly bodes well for the future of our teams when local talent can be developed through these competitions.”
With the foundations in place, plans for the Independent Schools Competition will be geared towards continued success in the 2014 season.
