Player Profile: Casey Samuels

We’re counting down to the first ever women’s match at the SCG between the Sydney Swans and the GWS GIANTS by introducing you to some of the stars of female footy in NSW and the ACT.

The first player we’ll profile is Sydney Swans Academy player Casey Samuels.

Casey’s an imposing presence at 183cm tall. She plays up forward but she’s also been developing her ruck capacity.

Casey, which sport did you play before trying AFL?

I was a keen basketballer. I currently play with the Sydney Uni Flames in the WNBL.

Do you have a career highlight?

Winning a bronze medal at the U19 World Basketball Championships.

Why have you chosen to play AFL?

I wanted to try something new and I thought with my basketball skills I could excel at football. This opportunity was too good to miss.

What’s been the biggest challenge in your switch to AFL?

It’s been difficult adapting to the physicality, endurance and variation in ball skills.

And which team do you barrack for in the AFL?

Sydney Swans!
