Canberra half-back, Angus Baker has earned the first NEAFL Rising Star nomination of the season after a best-on-ground performance against Gold Coast on Saturday.

The 20-year-old was in sublime form to kick off 2019, collecting 36 disposals and five marks as the Demons held off a late fightback from the SUNS to win by 11 points.

Baker, a former Sydney Swans Academy member, suffered a devastating knee injury in 2017 which forced him to miss the majority of the season.

He signed with Canberra last season and immediately impressed in his comeback. This is Baker’s second NEAFL Rising Star nomination in consecutive seasons, after first picking up a nod in Round 3 last year.

Following on from his impressive debut season for the Demons, Baker was invited to train with Sydney in the lead-up to last year’s AFL Draft.

The NEAFL Rising Star is awarded to the most promising young talent in the NEAFL competition.

Nominees must be under the age of 21 and played less than 20 senior games (excluding games as AFL club academy players) at the start of the 2019 season.
