Yiloga! Tiwi Footy

Yiloga! Tiwi Footy is a photographic exhibition that brings together a series of 40 documentary-style colour and black and white images, film and selected artefacts that explore the integral role of AFL football in Tiwi culture.

Tiwi Islands, 80km north of Darwin, are home to the Tiwi people whose passion for Aussie Rules football is a positive influence on life in the community. About 900 of the 2600 people who live on the islands play AFL, which is said to be the country’s highest participation rate.

Photographers Peter Eve and Monica Napper worked collaboratively with the Tiwi community to produce these remarkable images that endeavour to break down barriers and redress stereotypes.

This special exhibition explores the social and cultural aspects of ‘yiloga’ (‘footy’ in the Tiwi language) – highlighting not only the Tiwi community’s passion for the game but also its positive influence on community life.

The Tiwi islands have produced seven AFL players, including Michael Long and Dean Rioli of Essendon, and Maurice Rioli, of Richmond. Scores of others have played at senior levels.

Explore the art, ceremonies and lifestyle of this vibrant community. From the church blessing, loyal fans and game preparations, through to the game itself and its emotional aftermath – the images reflect the inextricable links between sport, culture and art in Australian life.
