Wagga Wagga to host ACFC

AFL NSW/ACT is pleased to announce Wagga Wagga will host the 2012 Australian Country Football Championships.

The 12th biennial event will be held in July next year at Maher Oval and the soon to be redeveloped Robertson Oval. The Rules Club will also be hosting official functions during the Australian Country Football Championships.

It is the second time Wagga Wagga will host the event which will bring together the best country and regional footballers from all over the country.

The announcement was made at the Riverina Football League’s Quinn Medal presentation on Tuesday night by General Manager – AFL NSW/ACT, Tom Harley.

“Wagga Wagga has been chosen to host the Australian Country Football Championships because it has first-class facilities, it is easily accessible for teams and it also has the support from the local football community,” Harley said.

“The Wagga Wagga City Council has done a tremendous job investing in grassroots sports and infrastructure and to be able to host this event is a testament to their hard work and effort.

“The event will bring people together players, officials and spectators from all over the country to immerse themselves in a community that truly loves their sport.

“The Australian Country Football Championships is the pre-eminent event for rural and country footballers and we’re excited to be hosting it in New South Wales.”
 
In 2010, the Australian Country Football Championships involved seven state teams including New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory, Western Australia, South Australia, Queensland and Victoria had two teams (major league and district league).

The 2012 event will bring together over 200 players, 40 umpires, 100 support staff and thousands of spectators from all over the country.

Almost 50 percent of currently-listed AFL players originate from regional and rural Australia.
