U13/U14 Joss SZT: Day Two scores

Day two of the Under-13 and Under-14 Joss State Zone Trials continued on Tuesday for the 350 plus players and umpires.

At night, the players were treated to a rare insight into the life of an AFL footballer when Hawthorn young guns Isaac Smith, Luke Bruest and Matt Suckling talked about their journeys from growing up in NSW to playing a key role in the Hawks’ 2011 premiership campaign.

All three Hawks players came through the AFL NSW/ACT Talented Player Program at various stages and overcame multiple obstacles to be given a chance at the elite level. Their knowledge and journey gave players a valuable understanding of what’s required to make it at the elite level.

20-year-old Breust, originally from Temora, grew up playing both rugby league and AFL. He trained with the North Queensland Cowboys in his youth but decided to pursue an AFL career. In 2009, the forward was rookie-listed by Hawthorn with pick 47 and after a few seasons developing in the VFL and VFL reserves he was given a senior opportunity this year – and he didn’t disappoint.

Originally from Wagga Wagga, 23-year-old Suckling was firstly rookie-listed by the Hawks in 2007. He made his debut in 2009 but injury ruled him out the week later. This year has been a breakout season for the talented defender who has played 20 matches, including the club’s preliminary final loss to Collingwood.

Smith, originally from Cootamundra, was initially overlooked for the draft but after a standout season for VFL premiership side North Ballarat last year he was presented with another opportunity at the elite level at age 22. Recruited by Hawthorn with their first round draft pick in 2010 (number 19) he played 15 matches this season and was an integral player for the club.
