Riverview, Waverley crowned premiers in 2024

By Jordan Woods

The Boys’ Independent Schools season concluded on a high note with a Grand Final evening consisting of two exciting matches and giving players and teams the chance to show their on-field skills, while supporters showed their talents off it.

Opens Div 1

The night of the Grand Final was fantastic. Each side gave it their best as St Ignatius and Knox Grammar engaged in a fierce match in the Opens Division 1 final. The game was outstanding, tight and tough throughout. St Ignatius managed to come out on top with a 14-point win, making amends for the school’s second place in 2023. The school has now won two premierships from the past three seasons.

Year 9/10 Division 1 Grand Final

In addition, this season included the first-ever 9/10 Division 1 Grand Final since the Boys Independent Schools Grand Final was established.

This historic encounter between Waverley College and St Ignatius provided an exciting start to the evening’s activities. Both teams raised the bar for upcoming seasons with their outstanding skill and sportsmanship. We anticipate more thrilling seasons as the competition heats up and applaud each team for their drive and commitment to the season.

And that’s a wrap

A rise in the number of participating teams during the season proves the effort and respect schools put into the competition. Matches were played in terrific spirit throughout the season.

Opens Division 1 was tighter than any previous season, owing to the schools’ commitment to their Australian football programs. Any of the top four teams – St Ignatius, Newington, Knox and Waverley – could win on their day, and we look forward to next year’s season already!

Thank you to all the teams, players, and coaches who have shown remarkable commitment and love of the game throughout the entire season. Looking forward to going again next year!
