Regional Championships – Day 1

The 2010 Cougar Sportswear Regional Championships kicked off in sunny conditions in Wagga Wagga today where eight AFL leagues from around the state battled it out to be crowned this year’s Championships winning league.

After the success of the 2008 event, AFL Sydney Under-23’s, Farrer FL, Black Diamond AFL and Riverina FL battled it out in division one at the Championships.

AFL Sydney Under-23’s and Black Diamond AFL are set to face off in the 2010 Cougar Sportswear Regional Championships grand final tomorrow after a day of high quality and nail biting football.

The results came down to the last match of the day as Riverina FL temporarily booked their place in the grand final with the expectation of Black Diamond AFL making it three wins from as many matches against AFL Sydney Under-23’s.

After two one point losses for Riverina FL they were hoping luck would be on their side in the final match of the day. Unfortunately last Championships’ winners will be ruing some missed opportunities in front of goal in their early matches as AFL Sydney Under-23’s stormed into the grand final.

Riverina FL and Farrer FL will have plenty to play for when the third and fourth ranked sides play off in tomorrow’s battle of the Riverina.

This year saw the introduction of the NSW-ACT Indigenous Australian Football Association (NAIAFA) for the very first time. NAIAFA is a very skilful side and they did their chances of moving up to division one next Championships no harm easing into tomorrow’s grand final against South Coast AFL.

Central West AFL and Northern Riverina FL will play off for third and fourth place at the Championships.
