NSW/ACT Youth Girls Team Selection

By Bronte Kerr

The 30 player squad will travel to Mandurah, WA to take part in the Youth Girls National Championships being held from the 3rd to the 9th of May.

54 girls were named in the original development squad late last year, and have since undergone a series of training camps.

A revised list of 35 girls travelled south to Albury last weekend to take on VIC Country in a trial and selection match.

With the girls vying for selection into the final squad, the NSW/ ACT side came out with all guns blazing.

The NSW/ ACT side were consistent in their attack on the footy and demonstrated significant defensive pressure against the Victorian team, holding their own against an outfit boasting greater size and experience.

After careful consideration the squad has been trimmed from 35 to the final 30, with the revised squad set to head west for the National Championships.

The squad, which consists of 27 players and 3 emergencies, will be Canberra bound next month to begin their official preparation for the Championships.

Included in the squad are young guns Rebecca Beeson and Jodie Hicks, who were last year named in the Youth Girls All Australian side after stellar performances at the National Championships last year.

Hicks is a midfielder who can win her own football and uses it well on both sides of her body, while Beeson is a hard-working key forward who plays above her weight and has a keen goal sense.

Sydney Harbour young gun Erin McKinnon is expected to have a massive impact in the ruck and will be vital in securing centre clearances for the NSW side.

The side will compete in division two of the Championships and will have their eyes firmly set on the big prize.

The NSW/ ACT team are expected to benefit greatly from the added expertise of newly appointed coach Tim Schmidt, a former Sydney Swans player.

Schmidt is excited by the wealth of talent in this year’s squad and holds high hopes for the side.

“I have been so impressed with the skill, the discipline and the tenacity the girls have displayed throughout the training camps and trial games,” Schmidt said.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing the girls’ progress ahead of the National Championships and can’t wait to get over there and see the girls play some highly  competitive and hard fought football.”

NSW/ACT Female Programs Manager Libby Sadler sung the praises off the girls who after a rigorous selection process have earned their spot in the final side.

“This is set to be one of our strongest teams to date. With an increasing pool of talent to select from we will be looking to go one up on our performance from last year and continue to build on our key strengths.”
