NSW/ACT Notebook: Round 22 wrap

By Michael DiFabrizio

Geelong 13.14 (92) def. Sydney Swans 7.6 (48)

The Swans have missed out on the top two after going down to the Cats by 44 points.

It was mostly an evening to forget for the visitors, with Rhyce Shaw going down with a finals-threatening knee injury.

The Sydney back line frustrated Geelong, who amassed 62 inside 50s to the Swans’ 37, which kept both the half time and three quarter-time deficits to 25.

But Geelong continued to control the contest and finally produced an accurate quarter in front of goal in the fourth, sealing a comfortable win.

Leading the back was Nick Malceski (12 rebound 50s), Ted Richards (nine) and Jarrad McVeigh (eight).

McVeigh also had 31 disposals and Josh Kennedy picked up 32 with 19 of those contested.

Up forward Mike Pyke led the way with three goals. Together he and Shane Mumford dominated the hitouts (24-51).

Geelong’s standouts included Steve Johnson (four goals) and Mathew Stokes (37 disposals).

GWS GIANTS 6.6 (42) def. by Richmond 25.13 (163)

The GIANTS were outclassed by the finals-bound Tigers, suffering a 121-point loss.

Looking for a percentage booster to overtake Collingwood on the ladder, the away team did almost everything right.

Their lead was just 10 at quarter time but a mammoth second quarter with 11 unanswered goals escalated things quickly.

The GIANTS did lay more tackles (47-42) and won the hitouts (39-31) but overall it was a dominant display by Richmond, who had 424 disposals to the GIANTS’ 318.

Jeremy Cameron’s Coleman Medal chances were hurt by being held goalless for the first time since Round 16 last year (and only the sixth time in his career).

Taylor Adams had 23 disposals with a goal and six inside 50s. Dean Brogan had 21 hitouts and four clearances. Callan Ward set the tone for his teammates with nine tackles.

The Tigers were led by Aaron Edwards (five goals) and Dustin Martin (33 disposals).
