High school finals wrap up

20 High Schools from across NSW and the ACT travelled to Sydney on Wednesday last week for the State Finals of the Swans and GIANTS Cup.

The Swans Cup and GIANTS Cup are exciting competitions designed for secondary schools located within both the Sydney Swans and GWS GIANTS talent zones.

The Swans Cup included schools from Sydney Harbour, Sydney South/Illawarra, Hunter/Central Coast and Northern NSW while the GIANTS Cup winners were schools from Greater Western Sydney, Southern NSW and the ACT/South Coast.

Both competitions consist of boys and girls divisions. The boys competition consists of Under-14s, Under-16s and Opens, while the girls competition will consist of two divisions in Under-15s and Opens.

Schools competing on the day won their regional divisions in either the Swans Cup or GIANTS Cup competitions that are played throughout the year.

In the Opens boys competition Erindale defeated St Francis College Leeton. Erindale were the winners of the GIANTS Cup while Sydney Secondary College Blackwattle Bay were the Swans Cup winners.

In the Under-16s boys, GIANTS Cup winners Mater Dei defeated Hills Sports High School.  Marcellin College Randwick was the Swans Cup winner.

At Under-14s boys level, Patrician Brothers defeated Kildare Catholic College, with Patrician Brothers also the GIANTS Cup winner and Epping Boys High School the Swans Cup winners.

In the Girls competitions, the Open girls was won by Swans Cup winners Queenwood who defeated GIANTS Cup victors, Kildare Catholic College. Queenwood were the first Swans Cup side to defeat the GIANTS Cup winners in over a decade.

In the Under-15s girls, GIANTS Cup winners Billabong High School defeated Eden Marine High School. Belmont Catholic College were the Swans Cup winners.

Patrician Brothers and Epping Boys, the Under-14s boys competition winners for the Swans Cup and GIANTS Cup, will now progress to the Northern States Cup in Sydney in September to compete against the best Under-14s school teams from Queensland and the Northern Territory.
