NSW/ACT Notebook: Round 10 wrap

By Michael DiFrabizio

Carlton 22.16 (148) def. GWS GIANTS 8.6 (54)

It was a disappointing afternoon for the GIANTS as Carlton handed out a 94-point belting at Etihad.

The Blues got off to the better start and never looked back, kicking six goals in each of the first three terms — and holding the GIANTS to zero in the third — on their way to a convincing win.

With the home side dominating in almost all areas there were few highlights for GIANTS but Callan Ward’s game was one of them. He had a season-high game for disposals (33) and a career-high for marks (nine).

Adam Treloar was also in good form with 26 disposals at 85 per cent efficiency. Stephen Coniglio had 25 touches with two goals.

The key contributors for Carlton included Andrew Walker, who had 34 disposals and six inside 50s, and Matthew Kreuzer, who had a game-high eight tackles and 37 hitouts. Up forward, Jeff Garlett (four goals) and Chris Yarran (three) did the most damage.

The GWS GIANTS are at Skoda Stadium next weekend, hosting Geelong.

Sydney Swans 17.13 (115) def. Essendon 10.11 (71)

The Swans made a statement against a fellow premiership hopeful with a 44-point win in wet conditions at the SCG.

The home side led by two goals at the first break, which elevated to three goals at half time then just over four goals at the last break. The Bombers were never able to take the lead.

As expected, the weather suited the Swans, who won the tackle count by 6, contested possessions by 16, stoppages by 22 and disposal efficiency by 4. Keeping the Bombers in it was their ability to mark the wet ball, with twice as many players with five or more marks than the Swans and a 6-10 lead for marks inside 50.

For the second week in a row Adam Goodes had a huge impact, with four goals. Josh Kennedy registered 37 disposals and eight clearances, Jarrad McVeigh had 34 disposals, Nick Malceski had 13 rebound 50s.

Shane Mumford also had his best ruck performance of the year with 35 hitouts and debutant Tom Mitchell was impressive with 18 disposals, six marks, six tackles, one goal and three score assists … despite only being subbed on in the second quarter.

Brent Stanton was the Bombers’ stand-out, having 36 disposals, an equal game-high seven marks and eight inside 50s.

The Swans travel to AAMI Stadium next week to face Adelaide.

NSW/ACT Notes

Luke Breust (Temora) starred in Hawthorn’s 95-point win over Melbourne, kicking 5.3. Team mate Isaac Smith (Temora) was also named in the best. Dean Terlich (Osborne) continued the NSW/ACT theme with 22 disposals for the Dees.

Jarrad McVeigh (Pennant Hills) was arguably the best of the NSW/ACT Swans, but he had tough competition from Kieren Jack (Pennant Hills) and Craig Bird (Nelson Bay) who each had 27 disposals and a goal. Jack also had eight clearances and nine inside 50s, while Bird’s 27 touches equalled his career-high.

Tom Hawkins (Finley) kicked 2.1 in Geelong’s win over Gold Coast. The other multiple goal kickers for the round were Breust and Smith, who also kicked 2.1.

The 194cm Jackson Ferguson (Holroyd-Parramatta) made his AFL debut on Sunday in St Kilda’s loss to North Melbourne. Ferguson has been upgraded from the rookie list in place of Daniel Markworth.

NAB AFL Under-18 Championships (Round 1)

A seven-minute blitz in the third quarter, in which South Australia booted five unanswered goals, gave SA a 48-point win over NSW/ACT in Blacktown.

The standouts for NSW/ACT were Jydon Neagle, who had three goals and six inside 50s, and Michael Gibbons, who had a game-high 29 disposals and 12 tackles.
