Miles’ stocks rise

By James Matthey

Anthony Miles will be hoping to break into the GWS GIANTS senior team after a superb performance for the reserves side in their defeat to the Brisbane Lions reserves on Saturday.

Raised in Howlong, near Albury, the uncompromising midfielder led the way for the UWS GIANTS, drawing praise from coach Brett Hand.

Hand was particularly impressed with Miles’ performance, but said his team needed to learn to play for the full four quarters if they wanted to be competitive.

“Our forward structures were working really well, Miles’ work rate and clearances around the stoppages was excellent,” said Hand.

“Miles was the stand out along with Haynes. Josh Bruce was solid down the back and Reid and Whiley both tried hard as well.”

“We played pretty well but need to work on our ability to stay in the game for longer and not drop out because that small amount of time may have cost us the game.”

Miles made seven appearances for the GWS GIANTS in their inaugural 2012 season after debuting in Round 4, averaging 18 disposals and almost five marks per game.

The UWS GIANTS will take on Ainslie at Wagga Wagga’s McPherson Oval on Saturday April 13.
