Liverpool: Where women kick goals

Anne has produced a series of artworks depicting women in sport, including an image of a young woman from Liverpool kicking a goal flanked by two Auburn Tigers players.

The artwork has been entered in the Casula Powerhouse ‘Onside’, an exhibition about women in sport which runs until March 24.

“The work comes from a larger series that I’ve been developing called Homeground!” Zahalka said.

“The pieces are inspired by early pub paintings from the 1930′ – 60’s which depict leisure and sport though rarely showed women actively involved. I wanted to give these early paintings a contemporary twist by changing the gender of the players from male to female to show that women also play the game but are rarely represented.

“All of the pieces deal with different suburbs and their communities to reflect the different demographics of the teams in the area.

“I’m really interested in the grounds where they play and want them to be identifiable to the locals.”

Zahalka lives in Sydney and has had her work procured by all major museums from across Australia including the National Library and hopes to have further Homeground! works acquired and shown publicly through local councils and public collections.

She is an AFL fan and enjoys the game.

“I love the game, I think it’s incredibly athletic and skillful.”
