Landmark weekend for Sydney women’s football

By Jack McAnespie

With the Division One Women’s competition kicking off this weekend with a Gala Day at Blacktown, last week was a chance for the Gosford Wildcats, Moorebank Magpies, Manly Giants, and UNSW/ES Stingrays to showcase their new Division Two Women’s sides for the first time.

Female Programs Manager for AFL NSW/ACT, Libby Sadler was extremely pleased with the introduction of these new teams.

“This was a very significant day with four new Division Two teams playing their first game,” said Sadler.

“Female football in Sydney started in 2001 with a small group of women, some PVC pipes and small-sided games.

“14 years on, there are now 16 teams across 15 clubs, spreading from Gosford to Wollongong, and Penrith to Maroubra.”

The weather played its part in some low-scoring games, but it didn’t dampen the spirits of the players, coaches, and spectators alike.

The scheduled family day was postponed due to inclement weather the previous day, but it didn’t stop 300 dedicated supporters turning out and taking part in a day where the atmosphere was as electric as the footy action.

The introduction of these new women’s teams has lead to increased excitement within the AFL community throughout the Greater Sydney region.

“The women’s competition is exceptionally strong. More and more females are looking to give the game a go at the Opens level, and new teams are entering the competition as part of existing AFL Sydney Clubs,” Sadler said.

“Many of the clubs are commenting on the positive impact having a women’s team has had… [They are] bringing another angle, more volunteers and greater diversity to their clubs.

“Clubs are always open and welcome to more participants joining their teams, they are dedicated to continuing to grow opportunities for females to play the game.”
