Aspiring athletes tested at AFL Combine

Over 100 players aged 11 to 18 years took part in the AFL Combine where they undertook the same physical and skill based tests all currently listed AFL players have been through.

Using the results from the Combine, players have identified areas of strength and weakness which they may choose to work on if they wish to pursue a career in the AFL.

The results also helped players realise what times and distances their idols were performing when they were the same age.

For talent scouts, the Combine is an integral tool to identify future stars who are currently playing the game or those who take part from alternate sports.

Combine co-ordinator, Sandra Haberley said the Sydney South AFL Combine which catered for players of all sporting abilities was a huge success.

“The Combine offers the opportunity for players and athletes to come and see where their fitness is at and measure themselves against their peers,” Haberley said.

“For talented athletes, who aspire or are currently in representative programs, this also enables them to gain experience with the national AFL testing procedures used to compare players hoping to get drafted to the AFL.”

Players from across Sydney attended the Combine from a variety of sporting backgrounds including rugby league, union, soccer and basketball.

Manager – Sydney Harbour and Illawarra Regions Simon Wilson, said one focus of the AFL is to provide kids from all sporting backgrounds an opportunity to play Australian Football.

“AFL Combines are about comparing the skills and abilities of an athlete against set standards,” he said.

“This Combine is a great pre-season conditioning tool for current club players, but also is a great vehicle to identify talented athletes, including those who are new to the game.”
