Albury’s Charlie Byrne training with Essendon

Essendon has invited Murray Bushrangers prospect Charlie Byrne to trial for a spot on its list as part of the AFL’s Supplementary Selection Period.

Byrne, a product of the Murray Bushrangers, is a classy half-back or outside midfielder who was part of the GIANTS Academy before his transition to the Bushranger program, but featured for the GIANTS as part of the restructured AFL Academy Series last year.

The 18-year-old impressed throughout his 16 NAB League outings in 2019 and was invited to the AFL’s State Draft Combine in October.

Essendon are looking to fill vacant list spots ahead of the 2021 season, with Byrne training alongside fellow NSW/ACT product Angus Baker.

Baker looms as a key defensive option for Essendon, with the 2019 NEAFL Rising Star starring for Eastlake in the AFL Canberra competition in 2020.

All 18 clubs have already reached their minimum quote of 37 listed players but two spots remain open for Essendon along with the possibility of a third by moving Irving Mosquito onto the long-term injury list after his ACL injury in 2020.
