AFL NSW/ACT to undertake Future Directions of AFL Sydney Project

AFL NSW/ACT is excited to announce that it is undertaking a Future Directions of AFL Sydney Project with the objective to establish a long term vision and the strategic priorities of AFL Sydney (across men’s, women’s, juniors and independent schools competitions).

AFL NSW/ ACT State Manager – Football Operations, Governance and Policy, Sam Chadwick, said that “this important project will develop and test Sydney specific recommendations that are flowing from the AFL’s Future Directions of Australian Football Report which, amongst other things, reiterated the importance of state/ community football and strong competition structures and clubs.”

Chadwick noted that “over the past two decades, the structure of AFL Sydney has evolved significantly over this period – to now comprise 76 male senior teams, 17 women’s senior teams and 443 junior teams across two regions, to be a tier below the NEAFL (men’s) and AFL Women’s League (women’s) competitions respectively. Accordingly, it is timely to develop a long term vision for the AFL competitions in Sydney, including identifying the key strategic priorities and timeline for implementation.”

The Project will also identify the strategic priorities for 2017 onwards and plan the staged implementation for 2018 season onwards.

Three key objectives have been identified, with the Project to deliver on important outcomes that have been called out within these three strategic themes:

  • Governance and Administration
  • Competition Structures and Pathways
  • Purpose and Vision
