AFL NSW/ACT Talent and Coaching Update

Plenty of other NSW/ACT players have been in action in the NAB Cup series this month.

Elsewhere, home grown NSW/ACT and ex-Rams players Jarrod McVeigh and Keiren Jack have been announced as co-captains of the Sydney Swans for the 2013 season.

Academy Programs

The Slater & Gordon GIANTS Academy Under-16s and Under-18s teams will play trails in Barooga in the NSW Riverina this weekend against the Murray Bushrangers. Many of the Under-18s players stepped up to play in the club’s NEAFL side against ACT last weekend.   The Under-13’s and Under 14s Development Academy programs are starting soon in regional centers.

The QBE Sydney Swans Academy Under-16s and Under-18s begin their trials on Thursday against Lakeside.  Swans vs GIANTS Academy Series games have been confirmed for 13th April and 11th May.

AIS AFL Academy

Level 1 players are starting their seasons, while Level 2 Academy player Lloyd Peris will head to the High Performance Camp and game series from 27th March to 14th April.  He will then play in a game against Collingwood before flying to Europe to take on international teams coached by Rams coaches Tadhg Kennelly and Brat Ottens.

Women’s AFL

The AFL High Performance Academy Female Camp was attended by female coaches and players from across the state and was a huge success.  The camp showcased the huge amount of female talent from across the country.

35 girls from NSW and ACT attended the Under-18 Youth Girls Development Camp held in Sydney from February 22-24. Of those who attended, 27 were selected to represent NSW/ACT at the Under-18s Youth Girls Nationals in Shepparton in May.  Coaches noted an increasing depth of talent and enthusiasm for Youth Girls AFL across the state and territory.

Multicultural/Indigenous

The Jack Atkinson Indigenous Carnival held in Wagga Wagga on the weekend was a huge success.  Albury’s Millewah Suns won the AFL tournament, while Wagga Wagga’s Marrambidya Swans were netball champions.

Indigenous talent searches have taken place right across the state in recent weeks, with pleasing test results recorded.  A number of players have been identified to participate in future carnivals.

Coaching Courses

Course delivery and accreditation is in full swing, with good numbers attending courses across the state and territory. Coaches are advised to consult the talent calendar to find out when courses are coming up in each region.

Talent Prospectus

The 2013 Talent Prospectus will be mailed to all clubs in NSW and ACT over the coming weeks, with every club receiving two copies. The booklet will also be posted direct to every current accredited coach on the database, and every coaching course participant who attends a course this year will receive a copy.
