Year 5/6- Knox v St Ignatius, Riverview

In the first of the year 5/6 games Knox Grammar played St Ignatius. In a fast flowing contest that moved freely around the oval, St Ignatius were able to kick a strong lead in the first two quarters. Knox maintained their discipline and composure throughout a tough encounter and were able to keep the Riverview boys goalless in the third quarter. The final quarter was evenly matched with the defensive efforts from both teams limiting the scoring opportunities of the opposition. St Ignatius were able to defend their early lead to claim the match from the determined and improving Knox team.

Year 5/6- Trinity v St Patricks

The second year 5/6 game involved Trinity and St Patricks. Both teams started the game evenly and displayed a willingness to kick the ball long, however strong contesting from both teams prevented either team from building a strong lead in the first quarter, which ended with only one goal kicked. In the second quarter Trinity were able to maintain good possession which enabled them to setup a few kicks on goal, however strong defending from the St Patricks boys and some wayward targeting kept the scores low. Trinity finished the second quarter with a two goal lead. In the third quarter St Patricks clicked into gear and were able to score three goals to Trinity’s two. During the fourth quarter Trinity were able limit St Patricks scoring opportunities while managing to kick home another two to secure the win.

Year 7/8- Trinity v Shore

The first of the year 7/8 games saw Trinity taking on Shore. The first quarter was a disciplined and physical contest between two evenly-matched teams. Both sides showed a fierce determination in both offence and defence which resulted in both teams only managing to kick one goal each in the first quarter. This continued in the second quarter, with both teams demonstrating strong teamwork and positional play to both move the ball and defend their goal. Shore commenced the third quarter with a slim four point lead. The fourth quarter was a continuation of the superb efforts displayed by both teams in the previous three quarters. In a game in which only twelve goals where kicked, six each, Trinity were able to claim the win by one point.

Year 7/8- St Ignatius, Riverview 1 v Cranbrook

The second of the year 7/8 games was played between St Ignatius 1 and Cranbrook. It was a very spirited and determined effort from the SIC boys who took control of the ball early in the game and were able to build a strong score. The Cranbrook boys were courageous throughout and continue to display improving skills and confidence with the ball.

Year 9/10- Trinity v Cranbrook

Saturday’s final game was between Trinity and Cranbrook. Cranbrook came out very determined in the first quarter and built a solid score. Cranbrook’s teamwork and strength in tightly contested areas gave them the ability to quickly move the ball into their attacking zone. The Trinity team were caught out by the speed, strength and accuracy of the Cranbrook attack, however were able to demonstrate some very good positional play. Trinity should take heart that while they are currently competing with a team comprising several younger players, they certainly do not lack the skills and are providing a good foundation for the future.

Mahoney Park, Marrickville

Year 5/6- Barker v Redlands

Barker exploded out of the blocks with six goals in the first quarter. There was great improvement from Redlands in the 2^nd half and this augers well for their team if they keep putting in the effort as shown in this match and run it out solidly.

Barker College

Ben Lamb has great speed and is the midfield dynamo for Barker College. He was rated best on ground for his team. Rounding out the top three were Ben Graham, who has a good kick and often plays on quickly to ensure the ball movement is fast, and Nick O’Bryan, who took some excellent contested marks.  Other notables for Barker were Jenson Raue, Toby Tremain and Oliver Calligaro.

Redlands

Tylor Wessels, in his first year of playing Australian football, put in what must be considered the tackle of the day for all of the matches played in the year 5/6 range. It was an emphatic tackle that stopped his opponent in his tracks and you could hear the impact of the collision from the boundary line. Henry Quibell Arnott, also in his first year of playing Australian football, was a strong contributor on the forward line for Redlands and was rated best on ground for his school in this match.

Others to perform strongly for Redlands were Luke Vrcelj, Charlie Wiggins, who put in some strong defensive efforts, Harrison Wild and Jackson Smyth. Redlands, with more experience in their young team, should improve steadily over the coming season and next year.

Year 5/6- Waverley 1 vs St Aloysius 1

Waverley

The top six players for Waverley were Jake Burns, Ben Walton, Michael Mitanios, Joel Caltagiore-Pantato, Jack Harris and Ben Smith. Michael Mitanios stood out for his defence and team-orientated play and Ben Smith for his role in organising, providing voice and leadership as the team captain.

St Aloysius

Sydney Swans superstar Dan Hannebery stepped in at the quarter-time break to give some coaching tips to the St Aloysius boys. Amongst his tips included the importance of running in waves once your teammates have the ball, and getting back quickly to support the defence. He emphasised the importance of getting to as many contests as possible.

Harry Rudd’s transition work down the wing made him the standout player for Aloys. Will Lohan weaved through traffic with aplomb, and Luka Vucic did some good work clearing out of defence. Others to have a large impact were Evan Perkovic, Leroy Parks and Ned O’Neill.

Year 5/6- Waverley 2 vs St Aloysius 2

Waverley

Bodhi Reiners was best on ground for Waverley and took a series of courageous marks. He was commended by the coaching staff for being a team player. Matt HT was rated as Waverley’s 2^nd best as he marshalled the troops well in defence. Others to impact were Noah Mitchell, Olly Rinda, Rex Crabb and Ryan Bresland. A special mention for Suny Capron who has improved significantly from the start of the season.

Waverley

St Aloysius – years 5/6

Louis Pribula was rated best on ground for St Aloysius. He has been a consistently strong performer in all of his games for Aloys, as he is willing to run with the ball and thereby set up forward attacks for his team. Louis’s attacking play ensured that he was rated best on ground. James Larkey was rated 2^nd best on ground with Harvey Parmenter Aloys’s 3^rd best. It is great to see new players put their hand up for best on ground status – such as Ethan Homer and Nick Mair, who applied “excellent defensive pressure in the backline and some outstanding tackles” as stated by their coach Mr Coventry.

Year 7/8- Waverley vs Knox 

This was a high quality game that saw two strong football teams fight it out for the victory. One could imagine that these two teams will have spirited battles this year and next as they both have many good players in their teams. Knox led by just eight points at three-quarter time and just managed to hold onto victory by a margin of two goals.

Knox

Will Chamberlain had “a fantastic attack on the ball and rebound out of defence” according to the Knox coach, Mr Britton. Bodhi Phillips also excelled with his “great marking and kicking.” Others to stand out were James Roffe (best on ground honours), Luke Parks, Harry Potter and Jack Guttman.

Waverley College Year 7/8

Miles Glover is a standout player for Waverley as a result of his silky skills, but it is often the things that go unnoticed that make him even a more valuable player. Miles helped a team mate who had a set shot for goal, giving him guidance and confidence before he took his shot. It is this type of team play that makes Miles so valuable to his team. In this match, he was rated best on ground for Waverley. Isaac Bartholomaueus’s strong marking and spoiling of opponents marks ensured he was rated 2^nd best on ground.

It is good to see Campbell Rawiller’s football skills are developing rapidly, so much so that he was rated 3^rd best for Waverley in this match. Anthony Vassallo was once again a strong performer and Ashley Backland deserves praise for playing for his team despite having a chest infection. His doctor was told he had to play no matter what and Ashley contributed for his team by kicking two goals.

Year 7/8- Barker vs St Ignatius, Riverview

Barker College – Year 7/8

Barker turned up with a full team and a few extras (23 players in total), which augers well for the future strength of this team.

Tom Meechan, Barker’s captain, yet again put in a strong performance for his school. As the coach Andrew Lorenz stated, “He had a wonderful game in the midfield.” 2^nd best on ground was Oscar Bird, whose relaxed kicking style ensures that he has a high kicking efficiency ratio. Nearly all of his kicks hit the intended mark. Tom McPherson had a great game on the wing and he rounds out the top three players for Barker in this match. Connor Cameron took some great marks up forward, Ben Nogajski had a “solid game in the ruck” and Riley Thomson worked especially hard in the forward line. All in all, Barker is one to look out for in the next couple of years as their team is gelling well.

St Ignatius has a strong record over many years as being a strong Australian football school, but with injuries and sickness to key players it is difficult for any team to maintain momentum. Nevertheless, Mitch Lumsden was best on ground for St Ignatius as he was “composed in defence”, Declan Woodward was 2^nd best on ground as a result of his repeat efforts in the ruck & Harry Cullican was on the ball and obtained many effective possessions. Oscar Drew stood out for his ability to go in and get the hard ball gets for his team and Lachie Collins also put in a strong effort for his school.

Year 9/10- Waverley vs Knox

The year 9/10 match was a cracker between Knox and Waverley, as both teams wanted the victory and it was great to see both teams challenged right up until the last moments. There were only two goals in it at three-quarter time and the Waverley team was fired up to fight it out to the end. This is junior football at its best.

Waverley

“Mad Dog” Lawther, arguably one of the best players from all the teams in the year 9/10 level, was yet again a great contributor for Waverley. There was a loud noise of clashing bones when he collided with an opponent in this match, but Lawther got right back up and continued to dominate the key defensive post yet again. Tom Sharpe was rated best on ground for Waverley, followed by other strong contributors in Tom Hourn and Nick Blakey, Blair Ryan and Luca Reiners. Brooklyn Hardiker was rated one of Waverley’s top players, despite being a late inclusion and being new to the game, having come from a rugby background.

Knox

Knox’s Charlie Sennitt is a prodigious kick, who can kick the ball at least 40-50 metres without any problem. Charlie was rated best on ground for Knox, with Ned Campbell rated 2^nd best and Alex McConnell rounding out the top three players. Alex Selvarajah was next best as he set up many centre square clearances as Knox’s ruckman. Samuel Ritchens was dangerous on the forward line and Harrison White controlled the air in the backline. All in all, Knox stood up well as a team to the strong Waverley challenge.
