GIANTS have a ball at Community Camp

The first day began with half the players conducting clinics at local schools while the other half visited some of Canberra’s famous landmarks.

Over 20 players held clinics for students Chapman Public School, Narrabundah Early Childhood Centre, Queanbeyan Public School, Trinity Christian School, Waninassa School, St Anthony’s Primary School, Mackillip High School and St Clare of Assisi Primary School.

GIANTS midfielder Stephen Coniglio and new recruits Shane Mumford and Josh Hunt made an appearance at Australia Post, Canberra City to meet some GIANTS fans and speak to the media.

“We’ve got a few games here in Canberra next year so is nice to get out in the community and have a look at a few of the supporters,” Hunt said on his first official day in GIANTS colours.

The trio said they were excited to be in Canberra this year and looking forward to playing four home games in the nation’s capital in 2014.

“We’re here four times next year including the Swans in the NAB Challenge,” Coniglio said.

“It’s always good to come down here to Canberra and there’s a few supporters here down here today already.

“Our first win was here against the Suns which was a very fond memory.”

Mumford encouraged all GIANTS fans to get to the first ACT match on February 20 at StarTrack Oval, Canberra.

“The more we can grow our supporter base down here the more people who will get out to the four games we do have out here,” Mumford said.

“The first game is obviously against the Swans – if we can get a full crowd down here for that one it will be a great start.”

Players also visited the National War Memorial, the National Zoo and Aquarium, the National Arboretum, Questacon, the National Museum of Australia, the National Film and Sound Archives and Dickson Shops.

Former Head Coach Kevin Sheedy spoke to Year 10 students at Belconnen High School about his life in the AFL and the Smith Family Christmas Appeal.

The GIANTS then completed a weights and stretching session at the Australian National University before visiting a host of local junior clubs.

Gungahlin, Ainslie, Eastlake, Tuggeranong, Queanbeyan, Belconnen, Marist and Weston Creek junior football clubs all received visits from the GIANTS on Monday night.

The second day of the Australia Post AFL Community Camp kicked off with an open training session at Ainslie Oval with all GIANTS fans invited to come down to watch the GIANTS prepare for the 2014 season under new Head Coach Leon Cameron. The players also visited more schools in Belconnen, Eastlake, Gungahlin, Ainslie and Woden.
