Faraj sets an example

By James Matthey

So often in football all the accolades fall onto those who are doing the kicking, tackling and handballing.

However, Ali Faraj, Community Engagement Manager for the GWS GIANTS, is hoping to be recognised for his work off the field as part of the Australian Muslim Achievement Awards.

Having previously worked at AFL NSW/ACT as the Multicultural Programs Coordinator, Faraj has devoted his life towards improving the opportunities afforded to both Muslim and non-Muslim youths alike.

Faraj boasts an impressive resume that is littered with significant achievements, illustrating why he is in line to win the People’s Choice gong in the second ever instalment of these awards.

In his current capacity with the GIANTS, one of Faraj’s programs works with 20 migrant and refugee students at a local Intensive English Centre to help them acquire a Certificate 1, which is the initial step in closing the gap between their journey from school to tertiary education.

Along with his work in Sydney’s work, Faraj is also Chairman of the Arabic youth speaking task force for the department of human services, he works with the Multicultural Youth Network NSW and is actively involved in the Parental Partnerships Programs between Bankstown and Canterbury councils.

On top of all this, Faraj also teaches at the University of Western Sydney, guiding and mentoring future high school teachers.

Voting for the Australian Muslim Achievement Awards closes on October 1.
