GWS GIANTS 6.14 (50) def. by Port Adelaide 19.11 (125)

After a dominant first half, Port Adelaide safely cruised to a 75-point win over the GWS GIANTS on Sunday.

Port kicked six goals in each of the first two terms while holding the GIANTS to just one for the entire half.

For the Power, Kane Cornes had an enormous 34 disposals at 88 per cent efficiency, yet he was among an unusually-high five players to gain at least 30 touches.

Travis Boak (29 disposals) and Angus Monfries (30) saw plenty of it and managed three goals each. Cameron O’Shea’s 30 came at 90 per cent and he also kicked two goals. Brad Ebert’s 30 came with 12 marks.

It was all too much for the GIANTS, whose best performer was the improving Tom Scully with 30 touches, nine marks and seven rebound 50s.

Adam Treloar had 24 disposals with seven tackles and Adam Tomlinson, who’s starting to find some serious form, had 20 disposals with 12 marks.

Port dominated possession (disposals 379-450) and inside 50s (41-67). To the GIANTS’ credit, they were able to apply pressure throughout the game despite the scoreboard, winning the tackles (67-53).

Port celebrated Kane Cornes breaking the club’s games record, while the GIANTS enter the bye knowing they weren’t able to back up a quality performance against Geelong one week ago.

They’ll now be looking to replicate the Gold Coast Suns, who showed significant improvement in the latter half of their second season in the comp last year.

NSW/ACT Notes

Jacob Townsend (Leeton-Whitton) led the NSW/ACT GIANTS with 18 disposals and five tackles.

Zac Williams (Narrandera) played his fourth game for the GIANTS and kicked his first AFL goal. Kevin Sheedy was excited about Williams’ future in the post-game press conference.

“I don’t think he’ll ever want to leave the Giants because he would love the Giants for the opportunity he’s been given,” said Sheedy. “The little time I’ve had with him, I think he’ll be a good player.”

Of the three NSW/ACT players playing for Hawthorn on Friday, Taylor Duryea (Wahguyah) was the standout. He had three score assists and four inside 50s.

Sam Rowe (North Albury) made a return to the Carlton line-up in their match against Hawthorn. He kicked a goal and took four marks.
