AFL announces National Women’s Draft

The MCG will play host to the Melbourne Women’s FC vs. Western Bulldogs Women’s FC match, with Australia’s best female talent on display.

AFL NSW/ACT is calling on women over the age of 17 to nominate themselves or anyone else for an opportunity to play against the nation’s best females on the 29th of June.

In honour of the support by Melbourne Demons and Western Bulldogs football clubs, the women will sport the jumpers of both teams.

Libby Sadler, AFL NSW/ACT Female Programs Manager said: “Women’s Round is a great way to recognise the involvement of women across all aspects of AFL and this initiative by the Demons and Bulldogs is a fabulous opportunity to highlight our elite female footballers and showcase their skills.”

“This is a key step forward in the AFL’s vision to have an elite female competition by 2020. It will showcase the amazing talent that we have in female football currently and highlight where we are heading,” Sadler said.

The squad is expected to be predominately made up of All-Australians, state representatives and the AFL’s High Performance Academy members.

NSW/ACT will have several players nominated in the draft ranging in age but all excelling in skill level.

The AFL will also financially support several interstate players to attend the match ensuring the best players are on show for the fixture.
