Sydney Swans 16.7 (103) def. by Geelong Cats 19.10 (124)
On Friday night the Swans suffered their first defeat of the season, falling to Geelong by 21 points.
After a high-scoring first term and an even second quarter, the Cats broke away. Joel Selwood was behind a lot of it, picking up 30 disposals, nine tackles and seven clearances.
The dangers in front of goal were Tom Hawkins and Stephen Motlop, who had three each.
Best on ground for the Swans was Dan Hannebery who had 29 touches and two goals. Jarrad McVeigh was superb again with three goals.
There won’t be much time to dwell on the final result. The Swans head to New Zealand this week for an Anzac Day clash with St Kilda in Wellington.
Melbourne 22.12 (144) def. GWS Giants 15.13 (103)
Melbourne picked up their first win of the season in defeating the GIANTS by 41 points.
The final scoreboard did not reflect the evenness of the first three quarters. It wasn’t until a massive final term from Melbourne, who scored 12 goals to two, that Dees fans could celebrate.
The Demons were led ably by captains Jack Grimes and Jack Trengove and recruit Shannon Byrnes, while Jeremy Howe had four goals.
The leading goal kicker was in orange, however, with Setanta O’hAilpin kicking five.
Adam Treloar’s performance was noteworthy. He had 30 disposals and two goals.
Next week, the GIANTS play Gold Coast in Canberra.
NSW/ACT Notes
– Tom Hawkins (Finley) and Jarrad McVeigh (Pennant Hills) were among their teams’ best on Friday night. Kieren Jack (Pennant Hills) also had 29 disposals while Tony Armstrong (Burrumbuttock) had 17 at 82 per cent efficiency.
– Isaac Smith (Temora) had 23 disposals and took ten marks as Hawthorn defeated Fremantle. Luke Breust (Temora) had 21 touches and two goals. Taylor Duryea (Wahguyah) had 17 touches and seven marks.
– Lenny Hayes (Pennant Hills) had 25 disposals for St Kilda as they fell to Essendon.
– Sam Rowe (North Albury) kicked 1.3 for Carlton in their road win over West Coast.
– Daniel Cross (Albury) had 21 disposals and seven tackles in a disappointing Western Bulldogs loss to Adelaide. Tom Young (Wollondilly) had 16 disposals.
