Sydney Uni ready to fire in NEAFL

By Matt Rossleigh

In its first year in the competition the Students struggled with just three wins from the 18 matches in 2012.

However with the experience gained from last year’s debut season and a host of new recruits, club co-captain Ryan Silvester says there is no reason why the club can’t play finals footy in 2013.

“We just want to see improvement across the whole group so if that means finals that would be great,” said Silvester.

“I think that’s in the back of our minds but we just want to improve and I think we learnt a lot last year in a challenging year.”

Former Eastlake midfielder Tom Ayton  joins the club with NEAFL experience, while Indigenous star Malcolm Lynch will add insight after spending time with North Melbourne in 2012.

“Tom Ayton came across from Eastlake and made the NEAFL Team of the Year last year so he’ll be quality in our midfield,” said Silvester.

“Malcom Lynch was just de-listed from the Kangaroos last year and  he’s another one to look out for.

“He’s a really quick Indigenous player with really good skills so he’s another one to keep an eye on.”

Sydney University will have a final warm up match against Sydney Swans reserves at Lakeside Oval on Friday night before playing its first NEAFL match of 2013 against Belconnen on Saturday 30 March.
