Sheedy tells Swans to watch out
GIANTS coach Kevin Sheedy believes the gap between Sydney and GWS is closing and if the Swans underestimate his side in round one, they may end up walking the plank.
NSW’s resident-AFL mastermind says if the Swans take the GIANTS lightly they will be in for a shock: “I don’t think they want to think they can treat us with any disrespect because we’ll smell that very quickly.”
The AFL’s most improved side, the GWS GIANTS, will host the defending premiers, the Sydney Swans, in the season’s first NSW derby on Saturday week.
The Sydney Swans went winless through the NAB cup with neighbours the GIANTS one of the sides who knocked them off but GIANTS coach Kevin Sheedy is not using the pre-season tournament as a form guide.
“I read some of the comments about where their fitness was at and that sort of thing but they’re a damn good side, the Swans, but we’re better than last year too.”
Both sides have had mixed pre-seasons; with the GIANTS pushing the Brisbane Lions to the final siren only to be pipped by the NAB cup champions.
The Swans didn’t win a game in February but rested their stars during the pre-season campaign in order to test their depth against AFL calibre.
The GIANTS impressive start to the pre-season means players are jostling for positions for the first time in the club’s history.
“…for the first time we will have pressure at selection – we’ve never had that,” Sheedy said.
