Junior Swans and GIANTS go head to head

The cross-town AFL clash between the Sydney Swans and GWS GIANTS is still weeks away, but an even newer rivalry will be played out between the junior clubs of the Newtown Swans and Concord GIANTS.

The first junior-derby between the two teams will be held at 9:30am this Sunday, when the Swans and GIANTS go head-to-head at Bat & Ball Oval at Moore Park. Once a quiet suburban park, the ground will be transformed into a battlefield when these fierce rivals meet.

The newly named Concord GIANTS say the encounter will be fiery when the two clubs meet.

“We think it’s a natural rivalry between the junior clubs,” said the Concord Giants’ recruitment manager David Bradley.

“Since we switched our name to the Giants we’ve seen a huge up-take in registration. Our numbers have doubled from last year.

“We feel like with these changes we’re really kicking goals for junior football in Sydney.”

The two clubs will play each other several times throughout the season to further consolidate the rivalry.

The Under 10 teams will play at 9:30am, followed by the Under 11s and Under 12s.

WHEN: Sunday March 17 9:30am
