Family Fun Day proves popular

By Tom Westbrook – The Hornsby Advocate

The day aimed to reach out to the migrant community and encourage fathers and sons to kick the footy.

By sundown the Hornsby-Berowra Eagles AFL club had at least one new member and Australian Rules had some new fans.

Cindy Deng attended the day at James Park with three generations of her family.

Mrs Deng’s son, Bill Yang, a student at Hornsby South Primary School, had never played before but joined more than 50 children on the footy pitch.

“He found it very interesting,” said Mrs Deng. “We knew of rugby but that is quite a brutal contact sport. This is a bit different and he enjoyed it.

“He’s already been kicking the football with his dad in the park.”

Event organiser Jian Zhao said 180 people were expected at the event, but an extra 15 families arrived.
