Rampe awarded 2012 Phelan Medal

Presented in front of a crowd of more than 500 people last night at Doltone House, Rampe won the medal with 26 votes, and also collected the Howarth Trophy which recognises the outstanding efforts of a player from the AFL Sydney representative team.

Hosted by television and radio personality, Hamish McLachlan, the night recognised the achievements of individuals, volunteers and clubs who excelled during the 2012 season.

All past Phelan Medal winners and Life Members were in attendance, as well as members of the NSW AFL History Committee, Representatives of GWS Giants and sponsors. Special guests included NSW Minister for Sport Graham Annesley, GWS Giants CEO- David Matthews, White Ribbon CEO Libby Davies and Ambassador and Giants player and White Ribbon Ambassador Luke Power.

Three new members were inducted in to the AFL Sydney Hall of Fame at the event. Cliff Matson, Jaret Hogarth and Jason McPherson were in attendance along with family and friends to celebrate their achievements and contribution to AFL in Sydney.

Paul Simonsen from UNSW/ES was presented with the Ken Ferguson Award for AFL Sydney Volunteer of the Year. Macquarie University’s Liz Fassone was named as the AFL Sydney Women’s Volunteer of the Year.

Peter Physick’s contribution to AFL Sydney was also acknowledged when he was made a Life Member.

The Phelan Medal is awarded to the AFL Sydney Premier Division player judged as the best and fairest in a season on votes of the field umpires who cast 3, 2, 1 votes at the completion of each game.

The award was first presented in 1926 and then in 1932 tagged the “Provan Medal” after the donor, Mr Aubrey D.S Provan, the President of the NSW AFL. In 1937 the name was changed to the Phelan Medal perpetuating the work of Mr James E Phelan – a man who devoted much of his lifetime to the interests of Australian Football in Sydney.
