Senior Schools Plate winners crowned

Endeavour Sports High Schools clenched the Senior Schools Plate for girls and Hunter Sports High won the boys in a great day of footy.

Players adapted well to the wild and windy conditions across the 25 matches.

The second-tier competition was played in a league format, playing each other once to decide the champion. The boys teams played five games each, the girls played four.

Girls

Sydney-based Endeavour Sports High were the strongest all day, with a draw the only blip on the team’s radar, which they suffered in Round 1. Endeavour’s nearest rival was Bishop Druitt College, whose sole loss was comprehensive at the hands of Endeavour, 16 points to one.

What the coach, Sam Nolte, Endeavour Sports High said:

“On behalf of Endeavour Sports High School I would like to thank all the staff, support crew, umpires and all teams competing in the SSP State Final for the amazing opportunity to play AFL.

“Our girls were excited and definitely enjoyed the experience, playing alongside their mates against top quality competition. The win for our girls is a special one as they have worked so hard over the years to achieve the standard of footy they are currently playing.

“Our captain had her last run in a state final as she is graduating this year, she started out as the only AFL girl in our Targeted Sport Program and has now lead our team to victory in the state final!

“Thank you and we will see you again next year!”

Boys

With some great footy talent including Allies Star, Joe Harrison, Hunter Sports High were the favourites. Last year’s runners-up, the boys from Gateshead (Newcastle) lived up to their top billing, winning all five matches with a mind blowing percentage of 1135%.

What the coach, Mark DiNardo, Hunter Sports High said:

“Hunter Sports High senior boys are so proud to win the NSW State Plate event.

“After winning through from our Hunter region undefeated, we were really looking forward to the challenge today.

“We met some handy opposition who came from all parts of the state but the boys played some excellent football to make a statement in each game with some big wins.

“Louis Skinner was voted by the umpires as best player in the competition and our team was supremely led by captain and one of our best players on the day, Gabe Bose.

“Special mentions to Tahi Brain, Taj Barton, Layth Brain, James Georgalis and Joe Harrison for fantastic efforts across the games.

“Also our senior girls should also be recognised for their 3rd place result which emphasises the strength of our AFL program at Hunter Sports High School.

“The AFL should be acknowledged for the best run competition we have been involved with to date. It was professional, well umpired and a magnificent facility at Tuggerah.”
