Bombers farewell NSW great McVeigh

After 15 years and 232 games at Essendon Football Club, Mark McVeigh has made the decision to retire from AFL football.

The veteran made the announcement surrounded by his family, close friends and teammates at Windy Hill, a place he’s called home since arriving as a 17-year old from Sydney in 1998.

McVeigh said it was only fair he stand aside and give a young player the chance to launch their AFL career.

“It’s been an absolute honour to play for such a proud and successful club.”

“I’ve been fortunate enough to come to the best job in the world, and I can’t thank the club enough for the countless opportunities they’ve given me to get the best out of myself.”

“To pull on the red sash and play alongside some of the greatest players the game has ever produced has been a true privilege and one I’ll never forget.”

Senior Coach James Hird paid tribute to his close mate, admitting his experience and leadership would be missed.

“Mark has been an exceptional player for the Essendon Football Club and there’s no doubt his experience and leadership will be missed.”

“I can still remember Mark’s first training session when he arrived from Sydney. He had a deep desire to compete and win, and to his credit, that professionalism and hunger has never changed.”

McVeigh’s will to win and compete was evident in season 2011 when he played every game for the Bombers.

However a number of injury setbacks restricted the 31-year old to just three games in 2012.

“It’s fair to say this season has been frustrating, but all that’s quickly forgotten when I look back and remember the great times I’ve had at Essendon.”

“I feel my body was starting to tell me my playing days were coming to an end. I will miss footy, I think that’s a given, but I can’t wait to spend more time with my family and friends.”

“There’s a number of exciting options in front of me and I’ll spend the next couple of months working out which path I want to go down.”

Recruited from NSW-ACT U18 with the clubs first round selection (number 9 overall) in the 1998 National Draft, McVeigh finishes his career with 232 games and 107 goals next to his name.

The beautiful left foot kick was a rising star nominee in 2001, represented his country in the 2004 International Rules Team that toured Ireland and has been a pivotal member of the club’s leadership group since 2005.

In a special tribute, McVeigh will lead his teammates out against Collingwood on Saturday night at the MCG.
