Independent Girls School 22/23 wrapped

It was another huge season for girls playing in the Independent Schools competition, based in Sydney.

More than 100 teams started the competition in Term 4 2022, bringing their best week in and week out. The final week of Term 1 2023 was a hectic one for the best teams and players in the competition, with Grand Finals and the first ever Independent Girls Schools Representative match being contested, where players representing schools from the north took on those from schools in the south.

Grand finals were held at Pymble Ladies College and Barker College on Saturday, 1 April. With Sydney recording close to 100mm of rain on the day, the girls may have thought the April Fools’ joke was on them, but they still all competed strongly and had some fun (mudslides were commonplace in post-match celebration).

Independent Girls Schools Competition Representative Game

The first ever Independent Girls Schools rep game was contested on Wednesday, 5 April. It was North vs South, with 24 players in each side, who caught the eye of scouts throughout the year.

Around 20 of these players are in the Sydney Swans Academy, so the standard was high.

The following schools were eligible for North and South selection:.

There was plenty of interest from the elite clubs, with former Demon and now star Sydney Swan, Brenna Tarrant, coaching the alongside Swans Academy coaches and AFL NSW/ACT coaches.

They saw a tight and spirited contest, but it was North triumphing by five points in the end.
