Spotlight on: Elise O’Dea

Elise has always loved AFL so it was never a question of how she got involved in the sport but when! Elise has played more than 100 Club Games and has been involved for 14 years. At just 20 years old that means she’s spent most of her life with a Sherrin in her hands!

Which AFL Club do you support?

The Melbourne Demons. My dad got me on to them as I was growing up so I have loved them all my life. My passion for the Dees was cemented when I was 12 after I ran at my hero David Neitz following a game against Brisbane (which Melbourne had lost) and jumped on him and he could have just pushed me off but instead he picked me up and hugged me – I’ll never forget that moment.

Who is your favourite player and why?

Loving the big fella Nic Naitanui at the moment – awesome footballer, only needs a few possessions to have a major impact on the game.

What do you love most about your involvement in AFL?

I love being part of a team. Playing a role and being responsible and accountable for someone other than myself.

What is your fondest AFL or greatest achievement?

Beating Eastlake FC in the semi-final 2010. When I first started playing, Belconnen used to be on the rough end of a few Eastlake thrashings, so beating them was particularly satisfying. I can’t help smiling every time I think about it.

Who inspires you in AFL and why?

My family, friends and teammates – because they support me no matter what, and are just as passionate about the sport as I am. I wouldn’t have got to where I am without them helping me along the way.

You attended the AIS Academy in 2011, what was your highlight from that program?

There were so many highlights from the academy, but I think getting to go to the Grand Final at the end of the week was the major highlight. It was the first time I’ve been to an AFL Grand Final, and one of the best days of my life.

Where would you like to see women’s football in the future?

I would like to see a strong national competition with well-developed pathways for girls from a young age.

What does being a good leader mean to you?

First and foremost it means putting the team before the individual. Never asking someone to do something you wouldn’t do yourself. Supporting your teammates in the good times and the bad times. Trying to find the positives after a dirty day. Being loyal to your team and having your teammates back no matter what.
