Roos scouts Hunter talent

Former premiership winning Sydney Swans coach Paul Roos was the guest star, as AFL NSW/ACT Hunter Region held another successful AFL Boot Camp.

More than 50 junior footy players from the Hunter region were given the opportunity to impress last week, when AFL NSW/ACT hosted an AFL Boot Camp with guest coach Paul Roos.

The former premiership winning Sydney Swans coach was on hand to share his expertise and check out the local talent at Tulkaba Oval, alongside fellow Swans Academy coach Chris Smith and NSW Institute of Sport’s Danny Deigan.

The players, aged from 9-16, were put their paces during the camp’s rigourous program, which included fitness testing, a kicking master class from Paul Roos, nutrition education and strength work with Danny Deigan as well as a talk from Chris Smith about the Swans Academy pathway opportunities in the region.

Local players from the Hunter Academy of Sport AFL squad also participated in the event, the second of its kind in the region.

Hunter Regional Coordinator Craig Golledge said he was pleased with the event, and hoped the high quality of both players and coaches will continue in the future.

“The day was a huge success for the region, and we’ve got a great deal of positive outcomes from the event,” he said.

“Obviously the highlight for the players was the opportunity to be coached by a premiership winning coach, even by the end of it they were keen to have their photos taken with Paul.”
