Swans launch Environmental Program

The Sydney Swans visited Randwick Public School this morning to launch the Team SWANS Volkswagen Environmental Program.

The Team SWANS Volkswagen Environmental Program resource aims to educate primary-aged children about how to be an ‘environmental champion’ including how to save water and energy as well as reduce pollution both at home and at school.

Swans players Jude Bolton, Shane Mumford, Ryan O’Keefe and Lewis Jetta took part in the launch of the program, which focuses on everyday actions students can take to have a positive effect on the environment.

The players spoke about the club’s efforts to save water by taking shorter showers, saving energy by switching off unused lights, and protecting the environment by riding their bikes to training rather than driving their cars.

The Swans players’ also spoke about their own individual efforts to be environmental champions at home by encouraging their family and friends to do their bit to protect the environment.

Swans midfielder Ryan O’Keefe said he makes an effort to look after the environment by leaving his car at home.

“I try and ride my bike or walk as much as possible and not take the car so I’m not burning petrol and wasting bad omissions into the atmosphere,” he said.

For ruckman Shane Mumford, he conserves energy by taking simple steps at home.

“I’m big on saving electricity so I make sure I turn off all the lights’ switches when I walk out of a room,” he said.

“Also, because every second week we play in a different state, I make sure I turn off all of the electricity in my apartment.”

The students then took the players on a tour of the school’s very own veggie patch, and met the Randwick Public School Scarecrow ‘Paul’.

With some of their AFL heroes on hand, the students also took their chance to quiz the boys about last round’s close call against Essendon, how many goals they had kicked in their careers and who had been playing football for the longest.

The Team SWANS Volkswagen Environmental Program has been created with the Volkswagen ‘Think Blue’ attitude in mind.

Swans fans with the best ‘Think Blue’ attitude will have the chance to win a family day out at the Sydney Swans vs. Hawthorn match on 25 August 2012 at the SCG.
