Manager – ACT/South Coast appointed

AFL NSW/ACT is delighted to announce the appointment of Steve Mahar as the new Manager – ACT / South Coast Region.

Steve’s role will see him working across the seven pillars of AFL NSW/ACT – participation, community, talent and second tier, facilities, engagement, fans and people and culture – to grow the game in the region. All AFL Canberra and South Coast staff will report to Steve.

General Manager – AFL NSW/ACT Tom Harley said Steve’s appointment is critical to the development of the game in the nation’s capital and the South Coast.

“Steve has worked with the AFL NSW/ACT Joss Talent Program for the past 12 months and his expertise, experience and leadership will be integral to the growth of the game in the ACT and South Coast,” Harley said.

“Steve’s role will see him working across all corners of the business with a strong emphasis on grassroots participation and talent outcomes.

“Steve will work closely with the GWS GIANTS, in particular Canberra’s GIANTS based executive member Garry Buchanan, to ensure ultimate collaboration so that both the code and the club thrive.

“Steve is highly respected in the AFL Canberra and South Coast communities and is the perfect person to drive the AFL’s national development objectives through local solutions.

“This is truly an exciting era for AFL in the ACT and South Coast with participation rates booming, strong junior and senior competitions, great community facilities and the imminent debut of the GWS GIANTS in the region.”

Steve has had an exceptional career on and off the AFL field having spent time on the Sydney Swans’ rookie list before playing and coaching Belconnen Magpies.

In January this year, Steve was appointed the ACT/South Coast Regional Talent and Coaching Manager and will now commence his new role immediately.

“The new role will help facilitate an approach which caters to the region and its needs,” Mahar said.

“By working collaboratively with all staff and stakeholders, we can maximise participation, talent and community outcomes in the region.

“With the GIANTS coming into the area we want to work closely with them on promoting their brand and also the AFL at the same time.

“They’re a great vehicle for us to reinforce that AFL is a viable option for kids and adults alike with myriad opportunities to become players, coaches, volunteers, umpires and fans.”
