Hawks trio return to Southern NSW

Hawthorn’s Luke Breust, Matt Suckling and Isaac Smith will return to Southern NSW next week for the AFL NSW/ACT Under-13 and Under-14 Joss State Zone Trials.

The three players were all recruited from local clubs around Albury and progressed through the AFL NSW/ACT Talented Player Program to play an integral role in the Hawks’ 2011 premiership campaign.

While in town, the trio will be attending an AFL Superclinic where they’re hoping to meet as many locals as possible.

The AFL Superclinic will be held from 11am to 2pm on Wednesday October 5 at Norieul Park, Albury and will feature skills, games, bbq lunch, drinks, player signing session and all participants will receive a footy!

The cost of the AFL Superclinic with the three Hawthorn stars is $20. Limited places are available. Register by email or phone, karen.suckling@aflnswact.com.au or (02) 6921 5000.

The AFL Superclinic will coincide with the Under-13 and Under-14 Joss State Zone Trials which are being held next door at Albury Sports Ground.

Over 350 talented footballers from all over the state will travel to Albury for the event and will get to hear firsthand what’s required to make it in the AFL.

20-year-old Breust, originally from Temora, grew up playing both rugby league and AFL. He trained with the North Queensland Cowboys in his youth but decided to pursue an AFL career.

In 2009, the forward was rookie-listed by Hawthorn with pick 47 and after a few seasons developing in the VFL he was given a senior opportunity this year – and he didn’t disappoint.

Originally from Wagga Wagga, 23-year-old Suckling was originally rookie-listed by the Hawks in 2007 and later again in 2009.

He made his debut in 2009 but injury ruled him out the week later. This year has been a breakout year for the talented defender who has played 20 matches, including the club’s agonising preliminary final loss to Collingwood.

Smith, originally from Cootamundra, was initially overlooked for the draft but after a standout season for VFL premiership side North Ballarat last year he was presented with another opportunity at the elite level. Recruited by Hawthorn with their first round draft pick in 2010 (number 19) he has played 15 matches this season and was an integral player for the club.
