Inaccuracy costs U16 RAMS at Nationals

The Under-16 RAMS have suffered their first loss of the NAB AFL Championships going down to Queensland by 23 points on Sunday.

Despite dominating the inside-50 count 66 to 42, winning the hit-outs 30 to 25 and centre clearances 28 to 26 the RAMS couldn’t convert on the scoreboard kicking 20 behinds in their 14.7 (91) to 8.20 (68) defeat.

Up the other end of the ground Queensland forward Jordon Bourke mastered the windy conditions at Blacktown International Sportspark kicking eight goals in a match-winning performance.

Sydney Swans scholarship holder Lloyd Perris was instrumental for the RAMS collecting 28 touches and eight marks while Michael Gibbons worked tirelessly all afternoon making ten tackles. Jedd Clothier was also influential gathering 25 disposals and four clearances.

The RAMS started well and headed into the first break with a handy seven point lead before Queensland hit back in the second term to be two points in front at half-time.

191-centimetre Queensland forward Jordon Bourke started to prove a handful for the RAMS’ defence and helped steer his side to a 19-point three-quarter-time lead.

The RAMS had their chances in the final term kicking 1.8 but unfortunately didn’t get the reward for their effort falling short by 23 points.

Next up the RAMS face South Pacific, which is bringing together the best international talent from Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, Samoa, Tonga among other countries to play in the NAB AFL Championships. The match will be played at Bruce Purser Reserve on Wednesday, July 13 at 12.05pm.
